Head Wines Riesling 2015
Given the choice, I prefer to drink most dry Australian Riesling within the first 9 months of release. That or wait until they’re about four or five, when that richness of toasty bottle age softens the edges and delivers more complexity as part of the mix.
On the whole though I drink more Riesling young than old. That vitality is addictive methinks.
This Riesling couldn’t be anymore youthful – it’s one of the first bottled 2015 South Australian whites I’ve had. It’s already looking a treat too, water green in colour with aromatics that you can smell halfway across the room.
Love that joyful fruit.
Underneath there is some post-ferment banana esters, a little peachy juiciness and then a very dry edge underneath. It’s fruit, not acid, motivated, with a smashable combination of gooseberry and nectarine fruit without tipping into flab. Off-dry, though it never feels awfully sweet, a trick that should be commended.
Drink this young and savour the taste of delicious fruit (like I do).
