Bird on a Wire Pinot Noir 2016
Another well-made Yarra wine from Caroline Mooney. This comes from a vineyard west of Coldstream. 100% whole bunches, with foot treading during the ferment too. Hands-on.
In a more robust vintage like 2016 the stem tannins just give this some bones to match up to the ripe raspberry fruit. It’s mid weight, sappy and savoury, with some truly excellent tannins. Love the tannins. It’s perhaps a little hearty – not exactly a delicate wine – but the length and drive mark this as premium quality Yarra Pinot.
Best drinking: Now, but up to five years. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $35. Would I buy it? I’d share a bottle.
