I’m not sure why, but Dalwhinnie seems to have had a few wobbles with these most recent releases. Both this and the Shiraz were decidedly underwhelming and the wines just aren’t getting the distribution they used to. I’m intrigued…
The problem with is all about oak. Sure, the fruit underneath is clean, fresh and even quite delicate and pretty, and the oak is clearly expensive, but the issue is the oak is everywhere – thick-grained and all encompassing. 2011 in western Vic required a light touch with oak regimes, which clearly didn’t happen here. Disappointing.
