Lethbridge Pinot Gris 2014 (Geelong, Vic)
Apparently there are now more Pinot Gris than Riesling vines in Australia (and more in Australia than France) according to this Lethbridge label. Sad state of affairs really as Riesling is just so much more sexier than Gris. More versatile too.
Anyway, this is good Pinot Gris. Good, I’ve-been-to-Alsace-and-actually-tasted-the-wines Pinot Gris, the nose a musky beauty of both freshness and intensity. The palate follows with a dry-but-full, peach and guava fruit palate, the ripeness offset with peach skin phenolics.
Initially rich and bold, this gets tighter and drier/tart as things go along, almost to the point where you’re sort of waiting for it to give just a little more gentleness on the finish. Still, plenty of style, and this will probably look even better in 12 months when it fills out. Good Gris.
