Alkoomi Black Label Frankland River Chardonnay 2014
Alkoomi, always the value performer, always without fuss. Good people too.
This Chardonnay spends just 8 months in oak, yet still retains richness. Straw-green, there’s a buttered melon and cashew edge to the nose but its not overtly oaky; indeed it’s quite mealy and more about yeast than oak. There’s a little hessian fusty older oak character in there too, which I’m less of a fan of, but it’s a fleeting taste, before a tight finish that suggests suggests malo was restricted.
Quality feel and tidy drinking for the money, needing just a bit more complexity for higher marks. Drink: 2015-2020. 17.5/20, 91/100
Details: 13.1%, Screwcap, $24, Sample.
Would I buy it? I’d probably have 2 glasses.
