Cape Jaffa Riptide Limestone Coast Red Blend 2014
70% Viognier and 30% Shiraz? Push those boundaries!
Bright purple red, it’s an odd aromatic beast too, perfumed and yet tropical too, the stonefruit of Viognier touching up against the less dominant purple fruits of the Shiraz, with a dose of purple Hubba Bubba and lipstick in there too. I had this at room temp and it looked odd, much better after a stint in the fridge. It tastes more like a white than a red, save for the light touch of tannins and vanilla of the Shiraz, just to confuse you even more, capped off with a noticeably warm finish.
Yes, it’s a Frankenwine and I’m not sure when you’d drink it, but kudos for trying. Best drinking: 2016-2017? 15.5/20, 85/100. 14.5%, $29. Would I buy it? No.
