Love the packaging on these Kaiju! beers. Fun 500ml bottles of goodness. Kaiju! have scored plenty of fans over the past few years with a combo of style and flavour, with high placings in the GABS Hottest 100 on multiple occasions.
They’re all typically wild brews too – and this beast is a real chameleon. It pours rather dark for an IPA, with a golden caramel amber colour. The nose is hard to pin down, vacillating between toasty malt and wild hoppy fragrance, the impact initially almost too resinously hoppy, but in the glass it settles down and comes across as more toasted malt driven. The chameleon!
A multi-faceted beer, it’s too bitter and too malty all at once, very much the classic, sometimes maligned, modern IPA. But that’s missing the point of a beer like this, and that is the joy of the impact – too much of everything, yet in a fashion that makes you want to admire it. More to the point, it’s actually quite drinkable, and it’s not actually aggressive or hard in any way.
I’m a big fan. 4.5 stars, nudging 5 stars. 6.7%
