BEER: HopDog BeerWorks Shizzam Four Hop Double IPA

‘This is a big IPA. Infact it’s a pretty big double IPA’.

That’s the understatement on the bottle. Indeed, this HopDog BeerWorks Shizzam Four Hop Double IPA is a behemoth.

First brewed back in 2008 by the original members (memebers on the label) of the NSW Brewers Guild and rebrewed by Luke Scott (Prickly Moses) and Bill Taylor (ex Lion Nathan) using 2 base malts and 4 hops from 3 countries. Hops include Chinook, Vic Secret, Riwaka and Orbit. 100+ IBUs! (more info here).

It’s a beast. Huge coffee caramelised malt, warming alcohol and some wild hop bitterness. I struggled through a single bottle, with the huge flavours threatening to swallow me up. Like a cross between a hoppy imperial IPA and with a hint of Belgian Tripel, it’s quite marvellous in its intensity, though I struggled to drink it. 3.5 stars. 8.1% (Couldn’t find a BB date).
