Rock of Wisdom Barossa Shiraz Viognier 2014
The final wine in the Rock of Wisdom cabal. Barossa Valley fruit. Mataro still my favourite.
Probably the wildest of the trio this Shiraz, the hints of brown in the colour suggesting a little wildness. Clearly lots of whole bunches here, the nose hammy and even a bit pooey.
Underneath all that the red fruit is quite attractive, even if its furry and ferrous at the edges, the whole bunches adding a sappy astringency too.
Every bit the minimal intervention Barossa Shiraz, this has character and soul, even if it’s just a little furry and less-than-pure. Drinkable, though not likely to win trophies.
Best drinking: 2016-2025. 16.8/20, 89/100. 13.8%, $28. Would I buy it? I’d go a glass.
