Sourced from 80yr old bush vines. There isn’t actually that much Grenache planted in McLaren Vale, and most of it is concentrated in a few old plots (and d’Arenberg have the lion’s share).

This feels proper Grenachey, in a ripe and fleshy style. It comes with beef stock (whole bunch?), raspberry, a pinch of pepper then a little volatility (thought not enough to break things). All good. The palate has more berry fruit, chocolate and then a warming finish.

Alcohol is just a little punchy, but the sandy tannins complement what is a punchy modern style with flow and great length. It feels ripe, honest, real. Authentic Grenache, even if just a little spirituous to be great. Best drinking: 2016-2022. 17.5/20, 91/100. 14.4%, $35. Would I buy it? I’d go a glass, but it’s just a little warm for more.
