Petaluma’s premium single vineyard Shiraz and it’s almost a star. From the B + V Vineyard on the eastern side of the Adelaide Hills, this sees 72% new oak for twenty months. That much new oak, for that long, in and Adelaide Hills Shiraz? Wow. Saturated purple mauve red, it’s a large wine for the Hills – punctuated by sweet vanilla bean oak, and that oak gives plumpness,which then makes the fruit look brighter and squeakier, and more berried. It’s inky, over the top Hills Shiraz that’s not without charm – the length is great, even if it finishes with some warmth. Gee this would be so much better with less. Still quality, even if you could barely pick it as Adelaide Hills Shiraz.

Best drinking: That much oak fortifies it, and it will definitely be better in 2-3. 17.5/20, 91/100. 14%, $39.99. Would I buy it? No.
