Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru Brut NV

How is Aldi’s $34.99 Premier Cru Champagne?

It’s pretty good.

The Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru Brut NV is Aldi Australia’s fancier NV Champagne, and as the name suggests it’s premier cru fruit. Not bad for $34.99 eh?

It’s a yeasty thing too, with lots of brioche breast autolysis on the nose. It’s just tipping a little over into forwardness though, which suggests drinking sooner rather than later. Still, the ‘shitloads going on’ nose carries through to the palate which picks up the yeasty strain and layers it over some grapefruit palate classicness. A smidgen short, perhaps, but again plenty of winemaking and interest.

In fact, this ticks so many NV Champagne boxes, albeit in a forward sort of mode, that it’s undeniable success. It’s not Bollinger, sure, but what a strong under $50 Champagne prospect.

Best drinking: this Xmas. 17/20, 90/100. 12%, $34.99. Aldi website. Would I buy it? Definitely worth a glass.
