The top Chardonnay for Golding, this single vineyard release was named after Darren & Lucy Golding’s firstborn Rosie May. I wonder what it would be like to have a wine named after you – a blessing or just another wine that everyone brings you at parties, stupidly? Thankfully for Rosie May, this 2021 Chardonnay from the ‘Western Branch’ vineyard in Lenswood is spot on.
Yellow peach ripeness belies the low alcohol. There’s a really nice interplay here between grapefruit, more early-picked, acid-shaped tautness and yet with flourishes of melon and peach. It’s an Adelaide Hills Chardonnay that manages to be refreshing and light but with a certain sunny flesh, too. I wasn’t expecting this to be so easygoing, but it works right through to the finish.
Looking at the numbers – pH 3.44 and TA 5g/L – tells the story here too. That’s ripe fruit (and no added acid) chemistry, delivered at 12.5% alcohol. A win.
