Roll up for another wonderous Oakridge Chardonnay. Dave Bicknell does it again! It’s Chardonnay, for Chardonnay fanciers. Actually, the Oakridge 864 Funder and Diamond Vineyard Chardonnay 2021 is just for anyone who likes bold white wines.
Drawn from a specific block on the Funder and Diamond Vineyard in the Upper Yarra, and it’s such a powerhouse. Evocative. Fully ripe, and fully worked, this smells of winemaking influences, grilled nuts, clay, some reductive gummy milk bottles, and solidsy funk but also lemon and grapefruit. Shedloads happening on that nose. It’s a big palate, too – there’s that fascinating multi-faceted palate shape that I love, with a resounding grapefruit tang, a creamy solidsy character and powerful white peach fruit. Oak. Fruit. Acidity – it’s all bigger, more, and better. A wow wine. It’s a Chardonnay smorgasbord, and I might even be underrating it.
