No one in Australia handles Viognier as well as Yalumba. That may be a thankless task given that this grape is apparently still a hard sell, but the wines are uniformly top-shelf. The Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier 2022 is a case in point. It’s excellent, for relatively few dollars. Crucially, it nails the tropical fruit vs tangy drive of good Viognier so well. Apricot, linalool, peach skin and a little floral blossom/honeysuckle lift. Underneath, it’s dry, quite powerful, more on the dry, acidic, and crisp side than lush and sweet, but layered with that peach skin phenolic punch to finish. Arguably a little too linear for top top points but I have so much time for this Viognier – if it were under another brand, it would be twice the price.
