There’s variability in the Hirsch Hill range (and I’ve received a bunch of wines with no finished label), so let’s call it a winery in flux. The better wines from this Yarra producer are still smart. This elegant Yarra claret is in a lightly leafy, if slightly too oaky, mode. Indeed, the oak treads a smidgen on the lean fruit and lends a vanilla edge (and oak tannin). Some nicely balanced curranty minty flavour underneath, and that oak will integrate in time (and this will live for a decade as a start). Plenty to like.
- Best drinking: I'd wait for another 3-5 years and then drink over a decade plus
- Score (out of 20): 17.7
- Score (out of 100): 92
- Alcohol %: 13
- RRP (in $AUD): 48

- Would I buy it?: a glass or two
