Captain Spotswood Pinot Noir 2023

The Tassie charisma of Bangor Vineyard’s Captain Spotswood Pinot Noir 2023

What an excellent name and a bit of a Tassie Pinot Noir find. Captain Spotswood was the 1830s owner of the patch of land now planted to the Bangor Vineyard at Dunalley, near Marion Bay on the east coast. Spotswood was a retired sailor who was granted a tidy 2650 acres around Dunalley in 1831 and planted crops. His cottage, located right near the Bangor Vineyard, survived until 2013 when it was destroyed in a bushfire. Meanwhile, the Spotswood range is meant to be about approachability, but this is much more serious than that – there’s a smoky, ripe, powerful, glace cherry vibe to this that is like an each-way bet for proper flavour. I would have called it more than 13% alcohol, and it even comes complete with some sappy firmness. Maybe a bit lumpy, but there’s a pretty impressive intensity. I’m impressed.
