The search for great Australian Cabernet Franc continues – am I a masochist? This is from the ‘Amos’ super-premium range, which is sourced from the Howard Vineyard at Nairne in the Adelaide Hills.

It almost hits the Franc high notes too – if only it was a little less ripe, it might be amazing. I get the impression that the grapes were hung out late to make sure the tannins were soft, the palate syrupy and heavy with a very warm finish (but no suggestion of unripe tannins) and a distinct lack of freshness as a result.

I like the black jelly bean, concentrated red berry Franc flavours flavours in here, which promises much for future vintages (2010 could be great, for example). This 2009 vintage iteration, however, ultimately tastes a little too heady and unbalanced to be enjoyable.

Drink: 2013-2016
Score: 16/20, 87/100
Would I buy it? No.
