The Mayhem & Co. show continues. I think I’d like just a little more delicacy in this Hills Pinot, yet no questioning the focus behind it. Proper wine this, from a brand on the up.
Wild fermented, 15% new oak, and what looks like minimal additions. A slight cloudiness which suggests no fining or filtration either. Did I mention that this is real Pinot?. Quite a full, strawberry nose that looks reasonably extractive and of some intensity, if just a bit too bold. The palate balances freshness and light with more masculine tannins and a finish that is just a little heavy.
No doubting the style or the concentration here – high fives for sure. Just a little more ‘lightness’ and it would be a superstar.
Drink: 2013-2018
Score: 17.7/20, 92/100
Would I buy it? Hmm. Close call. A two glass proposition methinks.
