Crafted by of one of the better looking winemakers out there (seriously, ladies love Alex Retief), this wine is yet another example of the promising new breed of Tumbarumba Chardonnay.
Sourced from the ex-Penfolds owned Revee Estate, the 2011 A.Retief Chardonnay is a wine that is absolutely driven by some clean acidity, the style rather elegant yet also given strength and power thanks to the sky-high natural acidity.
I must say, for mine, the oak (100% new) treatment looks a little blunt for what is a quite delicate wine, with the nose looking particularly toasty, nutty and obvious. Once you get past the nose, however, everything looks much more svelte, with a little leesy funk – and that beautifully crystalline acidity – helping to finish the wine off with purity and superb line/length.
Unquestionably stylish, this Chardonnay certainly refreshes, even if the oak looks just a little heavy-handed. Pass me the mud crab please!
Drink: 2013-2018
Score: 17.8/20, 92/100
Would I buy it? A glass or two would be lovely thanks. With my mud crab.
