Voyager Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2011
13.8%, Screwcap, $24
The Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot has been circa $24 for as long as I can remember. Yet the wine seems to be getting better and better. They’re doing good things at Voyager…
Unmistakeably Margaret River Cab Merlot – that’s the crux of the argument here, the wine utterly regional and varietal with a gravelly, cedar and currant nose topped off with that classic pencil shavings oak/Cabernet fruit combo. All present and correct.
Suitably, it tastes like Margs Cabernet (from the cooler southern bits) too, with a dash of herbs over a palate that is dry, medium bodied, slightly pointy and satisfyingly tannic. Fruit tannins too, that refresh and enliven. Again, all correct.
For it’s price and style intentions this is pretty much spot on. It doesn’t have the concentration or evenness of a top-drawer Margs red, but for a ‘bistro priced’ wine it ticks all the boxes comfortably. It’ll even live and improve in the cellar.
Good stuff.
