My expectations were low here. The Drift name is middling, the lack of any identifying winery never all that promising and the label has been an average performer over the years (the Sauv perfunctory, Pinot ordinary).

Yet this is really quite a surprise. It smells like Pinot Gris, cut with intense pear varietal characters, warm alcohol and plenty of viscosity – Marlborough goes to Alsace. Chalky, grippy phenolics and a surprisingly sprightly finish indicate good fruit and a steady hand.

Solid indeed! Long too. Easy recommendation from me.
