Clairault Cabernet Merlot 2012 (Margaret River, WA)
14%, Screwcap, $22
After a few years in the wilderness post takeover by Streicker Wines, Clairault is back (and with some brand-new livery too).
This Cabernet taps into the structured form of old, complete with a little leaf and mint for good measure. There’s still plenty of expansive Merlot fruit on top, tending almost jammy in places (a common trait in ’12 Margs reds) then finishing with dusty, drying tannins, the connection between fruit and tannins still resolving itself.
Approachable yet structured, good value Margaret River Cab Merlot from a somewhat enigmatic producer.
Tasted: May 2014
Drink: 2015-2020
Score: 17.5/20, 91/100+
Would I buy it? I’d drink a glass or two at least.
