Hahndorf Hill Blueblood Blaufrankisch 2013
Blue blood and blue fruits. That’s the name of the game here. Each year Larry and the HH crew get an even firmer grasp of what it takes to deliver tasty Blau from the Hills and this is bang on. A wine to make you think ‘hey, this could be a goer. Healthy numbers too – pH 3.38 TA 5.9g/L.
Boysenberry purple red; Blueberry and plum nose in a fragrant and nicely balanced compact style. Indeed this looks more Austrian Blau and less Adelaide Hills this vintage, which is real good. Blood plum, some oak thickness, lifted acidity and a bitter finish, it feels fresh, lively and plenty of grip. Maybe a little fleshy through the middle, but that late freshness works a treat.
Plenty of appeal here. Drink: 2016-2022. 17.7/20, 92/100
Details: 14%, Screwcap, $40, Sample
Would I buy it? On a list I’d drink at least half a bottle./
