Schwarz Wine Co. Meta Mataro 2013
Do you like the label?
The Jaffa orange label is the only oddity for this seriously good modern Barossa Mataro from Jason Schwarz. It’s really really orange. I like it, but then it annoys me too – it’s just so flat orange. Like bronzed Fanta.
Anyway, this is barnstorming wine. Sourced from Moppa and Vine Vale, the fruit was handpicked, fermented wild with 23% whole bunches, basket pressed to old oak for maturation then bottled unfined and unfiltered. A1 processing and it shows. It tastes like the future of Barossa Mataro. Just 1290 bottles produced.
Dark maroon-purple, it’s genuinely fragrant – which is revelatory for dour old Barossa Mataro – with the spicy whole bunch fruit giving a whole new sexy edge. There’s a lightness and freshness of black fruit, tilled earth and fine tannins, if not quite the depth and length of a superstar. Gee this is much more approachable and lively than nearly any other Barossan Mataro though! Love the licoricey fruit and refreshing style.
Yes. Yes yes yes.
