Chapel Hill The Chosen Gorge Block Cabernet Sauvignon
McLaren Vale Cabernet, when it’s good, can be deeply satisfying. Not strictly varietal, but packing a wonderful punch of flavour in a very Aussie way. No frills, but no shortage of heart either.
This Chapel Hill is such a beast. Deep dark purple, this has a concentrated, inky purple fruit nose and deeply rich purple black fruit palate. Nose and palate are a continuous flow. There’s that Vale tarry heaviness through the middle, but without excesses of alcohol or hard tannins. Just richness of fruit and oak with a smooth, generous texture and fine tannins.
A model of what you want Vale Cabernet to be, it’s a biggun’ but never feels gruff. Just big ‘n’ bold. Big, bold and slick, without excess ripeness. Not savoury, not delicate, but unquestionably full and proudly so. Still has space to improve in bottle too. Best drinking: 2015-2030. 18/20, 93/100+.
Details: 14.6%, Screwcap, $65, Sample
Would I buy it? I’d go half a bottle, maybe even more.
