Aged Sem bargain: Tyrrell’s Belford Semillon 2009

Tyrrell’s Belford Semillon 2009

I’ve been smashed by the man flu this week, to the point where midweek (Anzac Day) I couldn’t smell much at all. Thankfully I’m back to full faculties today, but gee it’s odd to have a week that I’ve opened little. Feels like I’m a step behind.

Anyway, this Semillon is in a very good place right now. Given I bought it for under $20 back in the day, it’s also a cellaring bargain too. Still light green, there is a hint of pool water (in an endearing fashion) the fruit all sour green apple and hints of grapefruit. What’s delicious here is the lemon butter development – an edge that bounces nicely off that citrus fruit and makes for a multi-layered wine.

Strictly speaking it’s more a drink-sooner rather than drink-later style, but right now it has the perfect balance between primary fruit and development, the acid soft.

Smashable, yet complex white. Everyone could do with wine like this in their cellar. Best drinking: 2017-2025. 18/20, 93/100. 11%, $?. Would I buy it? I did and have just nabbed some 2011.
