Brothers at War The Old Man Eden Valley Syrah 2017
Another well balanced release from Angus & Sam Wardlaw and well priced. This is sourced from their Pendee Farm vineyard just outside Eden Valley. 20% whole bunches are included in the mix.
It’s a juicy, primary Eden Valley red with blackberry stain fruit and pithy tannins, the balancing act leaning towards fruit vibrancy but in a savoury mode. Oak is in the distinct background, fruit is first and second but not overdone or overripe. Maybe a little simple? Such purity of flavour though – there’s a beating heart of Eden Valley Shiraz in there, delivered with real balance. Best drinking: Now to at least eight years, probably more. 17.7/20, 92/100. 13.5%, $25. Would I buy it? I’d share a bottle.
