Hard to keep up with all the Altus Rise wines, but this Altus Rise Ascension Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a cut above the rest. Margaret River Cabernet from an ambitious new label.
Dense and powerful with chocolate oak through the palate and riddled through the finish. Quality oak but a little lighter on the toast hey? Mint, dark berries, some alcohol heat to finish. Dial things back a bit and it could be great. For the moment it’s just a little bit trying a bit too hard, which frustrates given the structure underneath.
Best drinking: now to fifteen years. 17/20, 90/100+. 14.5%, $35. Would I buy it? A glass or so.
