Just like any of the recent vintages (like this, or way back here) this Wirra Wirra Church Block 2018 is a success. A reminder that affordable, widely available reds don’t have to be soft, shallow and compromised.
A blend of 51% Cabernet, 38% Shiraz, 11% Merlot all from McLaren Vale. Chunky, ripe, flavour-packed and even quite cellarworthy. The dark fruit is more Cab than Shiraz, complete with a hint of mint, and then the grip of tannins. The finish is a bit workmanlike, but aren’t we all rough around the edges? Importantly, this is a lot of wine for $22.
Best drinking: now to ten years. 17.5/20, 91/100. 14.5%, $22. Would I buy it? A glass or two for sure.
