The tricky, low-yielding 2020 Yarra vintage (low yields, uneven flowering, plenty of rain events, warmer then cooler, with smoke and fire threatening) is writ large in this Mandala Pinot Noir 2020. It just feels a bit light-on compared to the norm.
Fresh raspberry fruit, yet curiously syrupy in texture, it’s all front and middle, with round red fruit in a pleasant and approachable mode. It’s a pleasant drink, and still proudly varietal, although there’s not a second layer this vintage to take it to the next level.
Mandala Pinot Noir 2020. Best drinking: over the next five years. 17/20, 90/100. 13.5%, $30. Mandala website. Would I buy it? A glass.
