Sapling Yard The Curmudgeon Shiraz 2019

Review: Sapling Yard The Curmudgeon Shiraz 2019

Another week, and another Sapling Yard red. I liked the Shiraz Viognier, and this Sapling Yard Curmudgeon Shiraz is another unforced modern Canberra Shiraz Viognier that I didn’t mind.

Includes 3% Viognier, 30% whole bunches, and spends 10 months in barrel. All cranberry red fruit here with a sheen of vanilla oak. Proper cool clime, vibrant sort of feel with whispers of clove whole bunch and blueberry.  Midweight, though the oak gives it a glossiness and width before a slightly sappy finish.

Ultimately a different beast to the lithe 2021 Shiraz Viognier with more broad-brushed power and flavour (which is as much style as vintage). You know what? I like both wines.

Best drinking: good now, and for five years no probs. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $48. Sapling Yard website. Would I buy it? Worth a bottle.
