What a super name for a vineyard. Every time I see Ngumby, I start thinking of the Gumby song.. ‘he can change into anything, with his pals Pokey, Prickle & Goo’. Ahhh 80s world!
Anyway, I like this Soumah U.Ngumby Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021. There has been some vintage variation for Soumah’s Yarra Valley Pinot in recent years, but this is on form, in a chunky (good chunky) fashion. Warm raspberry fruit with just a little undergrowth, the palate is round and mouthfilling in its red fruitiness, complete with a little alcoholic warmth too. But that grunt is not unwelcome – this has volume and length, light tannins, punches of red fruit. Very much the riper Valley Floor style (rather than high toned Upper Yarra), but the flavour is pretty damn good.
Best drinking: good now. 18/20, 93/100. 13.5%, $40. Soumah website. Would I buy it? Sure would.
