How strange that this Hewitson Ungrafted Grenache 2022 is such a different beast to the Monopole from last week. Here, we have the lucid beauty of old vine Grenache in all its near-naked glory, compared to an overworked, heady Shiraz.
It just doesn’t make sense.
Anyway, this is Grenache sourced from 110yr old vines. 85% whole bunches. and spends nine months in old oak. Lovely effusive red fruit in a just medium-bodied, open style it is too. You don’t see the whole bunches save for a little late cinnamon spice to the tannins. Exuberant, lively fruit is the king, and great showcase of the complexity of grapes rather than winemaking, with a beauty that makes this both fun and delicious. Real tannins too! I might even be underrating it.
Best drinking: now and probably best over the next five or so years. 18.5/20, 94/100. 13.5%, $90. Hewitson website.
