Balgownie Estate Viognier 2022

Review: Balgownie Estate Viognier 2022. Another strong local Viognier

I must be getting old – suddenly, I’ve found myself liking Viognier (aka the V-weed) more than ever…

This Balgownie Estate Viognier 2022 is a strong release. Sourced from a block planted in 1999 on the Bendigo property, and wild fermented in barrel, this feels right. It certainly smells correct, all creamed apricots, with an oaky leesy richness showing that ‘peaches in cream’ textured juiciness of Condrieu. It falls away just a little to finish – maybe a little too delicate rather than being phenolic. Nails the balance of flavours, though. A very drinkable and varietal Viognier this.
