Want to know the definition of forgotten? Step up perpetual bridesmaid Coonawarra Shiraz! This Brand & Sons ‘Old Town’ Single Vineyard Shiraz 2021 comes from a one-acre block in the Coonawarra township. Do you like the packaging? My junk photo doesn’t do it justice but all of Sam Brand’s wines come in dead serious packaging, with big bottles and tissue paper and the works.
Off-topic, Sam is a (reformed) rally car driver, too, with a history of smashing out fast times around the forests of Kuitpo which looks both fun and guaranteed to almost kill me.
Anyway, this Shiraz is a grower. It creeps up on you. Sleek, cool. It’s still full, with fruit rather than oak on the nose. but in that sleek, shiny vanilla milk chocolate and blue fruits. There’s a line of warmth to finish but you get the feeling the good times are still to come. You can add a plus sign to the score for sure.
- Best drinking: Later. Can you give it three years? A decade is beckoning, with a bit of that Wynns Michael agelessness to it
- Score (out of 20): 17.7
- Score (out of 100): 92
- Alcohol %: 14
- RRP (in $AUD): 85
- Winery website: https://brandandsons.com.au/
- Would I buy it?: A few glasses eh?

I believe this is the same wine that used to be called CBD a few years ago. I managed to pick up ’14 and ’15 at the $40 mark a couple of years back. It’s am underrated wine for sure.
Fortuitously, I just received an email from Brands website where current vintage is reduced to $50 a bottle.
Much more doable at that price!
