It’s that time again. Time to inspire me to spend more money on drinks, even though the WineArk cabinet can’t be closed properly and the Amex is maxed out.
So, what have you been buying and drinking this September 2023?
My plan to buy wine in Italy was foiled by a lack of free hours, which meant I came home with only Prosecco in my suitcase. That’s not necessarily a problem, but it did thwart my bid to buy 2019 Barolo. Thankfully I’ve rectified that by purchasing a few bottles of 2019 Massolino cru wines, but I probably paid a shitload more than if I had bought them in Italy…
What about you? What have you been buying this September?
Besides plenty of Prosecco, much beer was on the menu after I left Italy, kicking off with multiple large glasses of Zillertal Weißbier during my brief sojourn in Austria. Oh yes, the Austrians know how to make great beer, and after a day running around a glacier lake, this went down a treat.

There was a somewhat unremarkable but entirely pleasant bottle of 2021 Schuster Riesling as well, with yellow apple and mandarin ripe fruit to the fore though not enough definition to tip over into ‘I’d buy another bottle to take home’ territory.

Finally, two new WCIPA releases from Mountain Culture & Range were a welcome drink to come home to; both have a classic bitter refreshment factor that the (wildly out-of-season) 32C Sydney September days have deserved.

What about you? What have you been drinking?

Bought – some of the ’22 Giaconda Nantua, first cab sav in 8 years so will be curious to give a go.
Highlights of tasting – picardy ’22 chardonnay just a lovely mix of nutty and fruit flavours, Passopisciaro ’19 Rampante, power and grace and the Chatto ’20 Isle – drive and complexity were really standouts.
Interested to hear about the Nantua too – I thought they grafted all the Cab over?
my annual Felton Rd purchase, the Vin Gris a treat …
Couple of bottles each of Mount Mary Cab + Wantirna Cab … maybe Yeringberg too (but haven’t yet!)
Annual member’s 6 pack of Tyrrells Semillon – 2023 Belford this time
Did you try all the ‘23s? Keen to know what looks best this year.
*the ‘23 Tyrell’s Sems
Unfortunately no – didn’t get to the Tyrrell’s tasting this release.
Re Nantua I think they’ve bought new sites that have good prospects for cabernet? I know one of the new vineyards is super close to Traviarti as an example.
It’s a pretty tasty number, the 2021. Lower abv (13.8%), red fruit, finer but still grippy tannins, elegant and good length to the finish. Not bad for $50 imo, about right for that price point. Screwcap too
