It’s that time again. Time to inspire me to spend more money on drinks, even though the WineArk cabinet can’t be closed properly and the Amex is maxed out.
So, what have you been buying and drinking this September 2023?
My plan to buy wine in Italy was foiled by a lack of free hours, which meant I came home with only Prosecco in my suitcase. That’s not necessarily a problem, but it did thwart my bid to buy 2019 Barolo. Thankfully I’ve rectified that by purchasing a few bottles of 2019 Massolino cru wines, but I probably paid a shitload more than if I had bought them in Italy…

Besides plenty of Prosecco, much beer was on the menu after I left Italy, kicking off with multiple large glasses of Zillertal Weißbier during my brief sojourn in Austria. Oh yes, the Austrians know how to make great beer, and after a day running around a glacier lake, this went down a treat.

There was a somewhat unremarkable but entirely pleasant bottle of 2021 Schuster Riesling as well, with yellow apple and mandarin ripe fruit to the fore though not enough definition to tip over into ‘I’d buy another bottle to take home’ territory.

Finally, two new WCIPA releases from Mountain Culture & Range were a welcome drink to come home to; both have a classic bitter refreshment factor that the (wildly out-of-season) 32C Sydney September days have deserved.
