Soumah Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Review: Soumah Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Not for the first time, I wonder how Yarra Valley Cabernet sells. Clearly, I need to get out more, but it also begs the question – would you buy a Cab instead of an equivalent Yarra Pinot/Chardonnay? Obviously, producers who are Cabernet-first (like Mount Mary or Yarra Yering), that’s a yes, but outside of the big names?

Anyway, this Soumah is another bold Yarra Cab. Strong varietal Cab signature – capsicums, cedar, dark berries, wooden furniture. The oak is a bit sweet and toasty, but that makes this more impactful. Despite that swagger, some excellent lines are underneath – it’s a ripe wine, but the muscular lines are sturdy, the tannins generous (rather than green) and the flavours even. In five years, the oak will fold in, and this will be something of a bargain.
