There isn’t much wine in just a single barrel. 220-300 litres for the barrels used in Australia, which works out to be just 275-375 bottles per barrel, assuming you can get every last drop into bottle (which doesn’t happen). Anyway, this is both rare and interesting.
Sourced from the Somerset Vineyard, which Angus Vinden + wife Hannah took over in 2022, it’s a light touch Hunter red of brightness and lightness. There’s a vin de soif gluggable generosity here but with more stuffing. Oh, and it comes from a foudre (which is typically bigger than a barrique/hogshead) so at least a few bottles available.
Ruby-coloured, it’s all cherry red fruit in a light and pretty mode of frisky raspberry. It could almost be Pinot. There’s a Pinot-like feather to the tannins, too. it doesn’t feel like classic Hunter (although ‘Hunter Burgundy’ like) but quite a seductive wine (even if I want more ripeness and oomph).
