The final wine in today’s trio of Victorian Pinot Noir dips, and this Balgownie Estate Macedon Pinot Noir 2020 is undoubtedly the prettiest of the lot.
As Balgownie winemaker Tony Winspear explains, the Macedon fruit for this wine comes off a plot that is ripe at low baume. Indeed at 12%, it doesn’t look green. Lean, but not mean. Indeed it’s a wonderfully expressive Pinot fruit, with mulch, blood and bone and then glacé red fruit. There’s such delineation here – you can see all the bones below the surface, like a starved runway model. I found myself craving just a little more flesh, but hey this is certainly pretty and satisfying Pinot.
