Wine should always be delicious. That’s the mantra. And this Handpicked Mornington Pinot is delicious. Not that I should be surprised; the Handpicked Pinot range was overwhelmingly delicious when I visited last year, and 2022 was low cropping but decently quality on the Peninsula (so all the ducks are in a row). What’s more, compared to the fancy single vineyard Pinot Noir, this fits into that genre of ‘try not emptying this’, if not quite as tannic and brooding as the Capella. This Mornington Pinot is light and bright, limpid, fresh, and raspberried, with this red fruit juiciness that is quite surprising given the low alcohol content, with just enough mulchy spice at the edges to give complexity. If I’m nitpicking, this falls away just a little and fully-priced, but that mid-palate fruit-driven life makes this the sort of wine I’d want to drink (not just taste).
