Despite all the Australian love for Gamay (perceived or otherwise. Maybe it’s just me), there still isn’t much planted of this wondeful grape in the ground locally. A smattering in NSW (hello, Tumbarumba) and South Aus (in the Adelaide Hills), but most of the mature and significant plots are in Victoria. It’s still early doors, but with wines like this Two Bud Spur Gamay 2022 to show for it, plus wines like the tip top Meadowbank Gamay, you’d have to think that Tassie could be the next Gamay state of choice. This Two Bud Spur is clever Huon Valley Gamay, too. Great colour here – a proper, vibrant red-purple. Matured for a year in barrel, the form line here leans to the Pinot edge of the spectrum, with slightly minty spiced cherry fruit that leads into meaty, savoury strawberry flavours rather than some of the bright bubblegum purple fruit. It’s a little bony and slightly firm, but impressively weighty and serious because of it.
