This is, unquestionably, the best Shiraz/Syrah I’ve tasted with a De Bortoli label on it.
The winemaking reads more like a $50 red than something you can pick up sub $30 (if you look around).
Hand picked, hand sorted, with both whole bunches and destemmed fruit making it into the ferment, foot and hand plunged for 20 days of natural ferment, bottled with no acid additions. Gravity racked.
Great handling.
Lovely wine too. Hints of mulch and undergrowth but not unripe, with stalky, clove whole bunch overtones without losing any shape or looking herbal. Wonderfully tannin driven, finely meaty palate is ripe but contained, cool and spicy yet also openly red fruited.
Wonderful, cool but ripe Shiraz/Syrah at a very very fair price. Buy it.
