Handpicked Collection Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Handpicked is a virtual winery producing wines from grapes picked (by hand surely?) from vineyards all over the world. It’s a noble concept, even if some of the wines can look a little ‘made’. This Cabernet is one of the better releases.
Hand picked, open fermented for 14 days and aged in 1/3 new French oak for 15 months.
Maroon red, there is characteristic cedar and currant on the nose, with a generous dollop of caramel oak in there too. The attraction though is the palate, which is even, carefully driven by tannins and with a freshness and balance, even if the toastiness of the oak looks a bit overt.
Not bad at all. Quite long too, with a certain grace. Score should improve as the oak integrates. Drink: 2017-2030. 17.7/20, 92/100
Details: 13.7%, Screwcap, $70, Sample
Would I buy it? I’d drink it, but the price makes it less of a buy option.
