Thomas Wines Two of a Kind Shiraz 2013
This is Andrew Thomas’ entry level Shiraz and the only non exclusively Hunter Valley sourced product in the lineup. It’s a nod to Thommo’s history actually, with his dad Wayne Thomas a well regarded McLaren Vale winemaker. Runs in the family, you see.
You can see both the 58% Hunter and 42% McLaren Vale Shiraz components in this, which gets a thumbs up. Purple maroon in colour, it smells of quintessential Hunter Valley fruit, with red earth and leather in amongst the purple fruit. It smells a little like the Sweetwater actually, but with a McLaren Vale plummy richness.
I prefer the straight Hunter versions of Thommo’s wines but this is lively, plummy and good drinking, with plenty of drying Hunter earth through the finish. Good fun. Drink: 2015-2022. 17/20, 90/100.
Would I buy it? A glass would do. Maybe more. It’s actually pretty handy simple stuff with character.
