BEER: My Beer of The Year – Feral War Hog American IPA

Feral War Hog American IPA

I’ve come a little late to the War Hog party, but I’m all in now!

Up until a few weeks ago it was Pirate Life IPA that was my runaway Beer of The Year (BOTY), especially after finding a pub with it on tap (hello Quarryman’s Hotel in Pyrmont, Sydney).

This is a big beer. Borderline IIPA rather than just IPA. I had it alongside a Pirate Life IPA and it didn’t look unbalanced though. Just more intense. A big pine/passionfruit nose here – steer clear if you don’t like hop aromatics – then a palate with just enough malt to keep you coming back, the bitterness a huge hit. Again, it just goes on and on, the intensity of flavour the absolute kicker.

I get why you could dislike something like this. It’s a massive beer, akin to a huge Shiraz in wine parlance. But that length of flavour? Undeniable. Delicious beer and in a can (love cans). 5 stars. 7.5%. Would I buy it again? I already have.

  1. Did you pour it into a glass? and if so did you notice the head dissipated within seconds of pouring? otherwise a great beer.

    1. Yes and no! What’s the deal? Just low carbonation?

  2. Andrew, have you hit up the Merchant Brewing Co. Beers? I love their stuff, my favourite is the Pale Ale.

  3. I hadn’t checked the site for a while and noticed this. I just happen to be drinking one right now. I wouldn’t say it is my favorite beer of the year, ( I’ve given that nod to Moondog Black Lung VI) but I’d have no hesitation buying more

    1. Must get onto the Moondog then eh!

      1. Their brewery is literally in the shadows of CUB at Abbotsford. They have recently expanded their capacity in a pretty serious way so there will probably be more of their beer making its way to NSW, although their crazier beers are always going to be small volume
You’d probably struggle to find this one now, and it is also not a summer beer.
