Pirathon Gold Shiraz 2016

Following on from the Black Shiraz comes the top dog Pirathon red. Interestingly, I preferred the Black, but that’s just me. From the De Fazio and Hillview vineyard, it’s also matured in 67% new oak for 2 years, like the Black (I’m presuming these are barrel selections given the similar handling?). It’s even more luscious than its sibling too – more oak, the flavours tending towards molasses and Cherry Ripe, then ultra-ripe, mocha berry fruit and some oak tannins to finish. It tastes even more hedonistic and decadent than the Black, but it’s no better quality – just more sweet oak and fruit, and the excess seems turned up a notch. Such impressive concentration, however. Best drinking: Up to ten years. 18/20, 93/100. 15%, $99. Would I buy it? I’d go two bottles of Black.
