Warramunda Estate Syrah 2016
The Warramunda wines are firmly on the up, even in a year as dry and challenging as 2016.
Sourced from the Warramunda vineyard at Coldstream, the vines planted in 2007. There’s the warmth of the vintage on show here, but not to excess. A hint of dried beef, cancelled out by oak sweetness. The tannins are not silky, they’re tougher than that but the flavours are quite complex and interesting, complete with a dash of earth. This isn’t juicy or polished, but a satisfyingly meaty and substantial Yarra Valley red. Best drinking: I’d have over the next eight years just in case it gets really secondary quick. 17.7/20, 92/100. 13.5%, $50. Would I buy it? A glass.
