Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2021

This Schist all over most sub-$30 Shiraz: Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2021

Sorry, but I couldn’t help myself – this new Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2021 is another winner.

Following in the footsteps of other highlights like the 2020 or the 2018 releases, this Eden Valley Shiraz is just a genuinely charismatic affordable drink.

We need more wines like this, really.

It smells real. Vinous. Regional. There’s Eden Valley blackberry and truffle sausage fruit, the palate mid-weight with a certain black fruit earthen savoury edge. It’s not thick or concentrated, and indeed is a little tart. But this is a $25 Shiraz – it’s not trying to be a serious red, it’s meant to be a good, honest drink with heart.

It fits that bill perfectly. A great vintage too (although more savoury).

Best drinkin: over the next five years. 17.7/20, 92/100. 14.5%, $25. Torzi Matthews website. Would I buy it? Worth a glass or two.
