Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Review: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

I have endless respect for the Balgownie Cabernets – in great years, they are wonderful, ageless, powerhouse wines of tannins and just-right weight. This Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is not my favourite vintage, though no doubt about the concentration.

Smudgey ripe cedar this vintage – it feels thicker, and slightly ill-defined for Balgownie. Dry red earth, mint, but also riper thick plum fruit. The palate is a bit ripe and heady, too, the hearty drying edges are a bit of an attack this vintage. It has legs, even if something of a drying red that seems destined to always be a bit raspy tannic and warm. The score is a nod to the length, which is still first-rate.
